During my Covid time I went on a journey via UA-cam. It started with some gold prospecting videos produced by Dan Hurd. He teaches in British Columbia and recovers gold as a hobby. This lead me to the geology of the Cascades, the Missoula floods and various volcanic events. Nick Zentner is fantastic on Pacific Northwest geology. From there my interest flowed (pardon pun) to the rivers. Dam removal schemes were awe inspiring. The immediate response by natural processes were astonishing. Fish able to access spawning grounds that had been denied to them by dams for many decades. At this point I began hearing the term Permaculture more often but I was still following my stream and was totally hooked on the efforts of The Paani Foundation in India. New techniques to slow down water and hold it longer in the land. The difference to the farmers adopting these techniques was immediate and dramatic. Ponds, lakes and irrigation spread over the land. Which bought me finally to Soil. This was when I started to study the efforts of farmers to address the issues facing them vis a vis soil management. Geoff Lawton and his various projects are thrilling and quietly awe inspiring. To see so much productivity from both his lands and the land of others that he assisted was mind blowing. And yet his explanations were simple enough. Nature will do the work. Nature will feed your crops. Nature will overwhelm you with its bounty. I am finally at ground zero with soil studies. Gabe Brown of Brown's Farm led me to the hostile farmlands of North Dakota and explanations as to how he turned his land from till to no till, armour for the soil, diversity and rizophagy. It is all way beyond just plain old fascinating. It is for possibly the first time in human history that we have had so much information on how we degrade the land and how much we can improve it. I wish all of you at SD Soil Health Coalition the very best in all your endeavours, you are shining a light and I thank you.

42:14 5x up to 30x more carbon gets into the soil through root exudates than through above ground biomass...

42:52 I sort of believed that just letting the grass grow bigger is just good, then I hear Jaime Elizondo talk about rotationally grazing one part of the farm, but quite severely, still with adequate rest periods, while leaving the other part alone until the end of the growing season for your winter stockpile. Makes so much more sense with this information: it's not only about animal performance to graze them at a young(er) stage, but about them exudating "massive amounts" of carbon into the soil, when they are in this vegetative state.

Growing soil / growing prairie grass is one of the most regenerative and honorable actions a human can contribute to the world today. Building soil like how nature did it for millennia is a “deposit in the bank that really matters” Making this commitment and leaving this legacy when not even a fraction of a percent of the population even understands or values this makes ranchers and families like this heroes. Where can I get some fresh bison liver?

I’ve no-tilled and used covers for 15 years in eastern SD and still have class I soils that have been too wet to farm for the last three years. I’m pretty sure it’s more to do with elevation, drain tile and equipment to land ratio that determined whether or not fields got planted in 2019 rather than tillage practices. I’m not trying to burst anyone’s bubble, that’s just my honest observation. Perhaps if everyone uphill used no-till and covers and avoided drain tile I would have a different story but that’s never going to happen.

Red ripper cowpea - Has been suggested for salty soil’s. If you test your pH and try to adjust it with a chemical then I think you’re just producing more salt. Most plants don’t like salt. Red ripper cowpea does.

I am inspired every time experts like Dr. Williams demonstrates the success of this changing paradigm. My career in the electric industry is now witnessing the industry going thru a huge change with the adoption of renewable resources. It's happening regardless of opposition by industry and government. Agriculture may have a much larger impact by the ability to absorb the damage of carbon I helped throw up in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuel to electrify cities and industry. That will be countered by big Ag and protectionism efforts once an impact is felt. My concerns are with scale and timeline and the cultural change necessary to reach global impact. I just retired from my consulting company and am focused on these issues of change within agriculture. Not sure where that takes me but I'm all in.
